Gambling Commission fines L & L Europe £900,000 over withdrawal delays
The biggest story for UK slots players this week is about getting money out, not putting it in. On 21 October the Gambling Commission announced that L & L Europe Limited will pay £900,000 in a regulatory settlement after failures that included delaying customer withdrawals across seven websites, among them allbritishcasino.com, casinocasino.com and hypercasino.com.
Two practices stood out. The operator's terms let a customer have only one withdrawal request open at a time, blocking a second until the first was authorised, which the Commission considers unfair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. For some customers, every fifth or tenth withdrawal was also pulled for manual review, which led to requests for extra information that, under the Commission's rules, should have been asked for earlier rather than made a condition of paying out.
The settlement also covers anti-money laundering controls that leaned on financial thresholds and sampling rather than customer risk profiles, and safer gambling alerts, such as warnings about time spent or failed deposits, that were switched on for some of the seven sites but not all of them. The Commission added that the company had no process for judging whether its customer interaction actually worked.
What it means for you: a licensed British casino may run checks, but the technical standards say withdrawals should be as frictionless as possible and that a withdrawal request cannot be cancelled and gambled back. If a site keeps asking for new documents only once you try to cash out, that is the pattern regulators have just fined. The Commission's responsible product design standard sets out the withdrawal rules in plain terms.
Regulator confirms financial risk checks will go ahead
The Gambling Commission's Board has decided to implement financial risk assessments, acting chief executive Sarah Gardner told the International Association of Gaming Regulators conference in Lima on 20 October. The full consultation response is due this autumn.
Gardner said fewer than 3% of accounts would need an assessment, and that high-spending customers are two to four times more likely than the wider population to be on a debt management plan. For slots players, the practical change is that very high spenders may be asked about their finances, while most accounts should see nothing new.
The speech also gave fresh market figures: remote betting, casino and bingo gross gambling yield reached £8.3bn in the year to March 2026, up 6.9%. Gardner warned that some suppliers falsely tell operators their systems are "Gambling Commission approved", stressing that the Commission does not endorse products. On the illegal market, the Commission issued 741 cease and desist notices in 2025/26 and has £26m over three years to scale up enforcement.
Brazil's 85 betting licences lapse as the online casino ban bites
Brazil's federal betting licences expired on 25 October without refunds, removing the country from the map for licensed online slots for now. Yogonet reported that 85 licences held by 82 companies lapsed when the 30-day window in provisional measure MP 1.394/2026 ran out, leaving close to 190 brands without authorisation.
The measure, signed by President Lula and in force since 25 September, bans betting offers and advertising, and licensed sites went offline on 6 October. Each licence had cost R$30m for five years, and an ANJL survey counted more than 3,500 job losses in the first 14 days.
For slot studios, the lapse shuts a regulated market that had licensed 85 operators in one go. Congress must consider the measure by 25 November, or early March 2027 with an extension, and most of the nearly 100 amendments filed would keep sports betting while leaving online casino out. Industry bodies IBJR and ANJL have asked the Supreme Court to suspend the measure, and Justice Luiz Fux has not yet ruled.
Evoke and Betsson results show the cost of higher gaming taxes
Higher gaming duties are now visible in operator results, and suppliers are in the firing line. Evoke reported third-quarter revenue of £406m on 23 October, down 7% year on year, or 2% once closed shops and currency moves are stripped out.
The UK's Remote Gaming Duty, which covers online slots and casino, rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026, and a 25% rate for remote betting follows on 1 April 2027. Evoke expects the changes to add £125m to £135m a year to its duty bill and plans to offset about half, partly through supplier savings and lower marketing spend. Chief executive Per Widerström pointed to 270 shop closures over the past year and urged the government to think carefully about further rises in the autumn budget.
Betsson's numbers, also published on 23 October, show the same squeeze from the other side. Third-quarter revenue rose 10% to €326.5m, with casino making up 77% of it and growing 13.7%, yet betting duties climbed from €41.4m to €69.4m and EBITDA fell 23%. Casino keeps growing; the share the taxman takes is growing faster. Expect operators to push harder on game supplier terms, which can shape which studios get lobby space.
Alberta's new iGaming market passes CA$122m in three months
Alberta's open online casino market is growing quickly and casino games dominate it. Figures from the Alberta iGaming Corporation, reported on 26 October, show non-adjusted gross gaming revenue of CA$122.1m from launch on 13 July to 30 September.
Monthly revenue climbed from CA$22.2m in July to CA$43.3m in August and CA$56.6m in September. Casino gaming made up 75.6% of September's total, with sports betting on 19.5% and live casino on 4.9%. The operator count rose from 15 at launch to 24 by the end of September, and 42 operator licences had been issued by 24 October, with 52 sites live.
Alberta had 388,585 active player accounts, averaging CA$146 of revenue each. For studios, another regulated North American market that is three-quarters casino is a strong reason to certify games for Canada, so expect a run of Alberta launch announcements from slot suppliers.
Pragmatic Play brings Sweet Bonanza into its POP range
Pragmatic Play released Sweet Bonanza POP on 20 October, a reworked version of one of its best-known slots. It runs on a tumbling grid that pays for five to nine or more matching symbols anywhere, and sits in the studio's POP range.
The bonus triggers with three or more lollipop scatters or POP symbols in any mix and awards 10 free spins, with two or three scatters in the feature adding five to ten more. The POP symbols are the twist: triggering with one, two or three of them pays an instant 50x, 500x or the 25,000x maximum win. Candy Bomb multipliers of up to 1,000x land during the bonus, and their values are added together and applied to that spin's total win.
The launch release did not state an RTP or volatility, so check the game's information screen before playing, where UK-licensed casinos must show the RTP or an equivalent measure of your chances. Remember that UK sites must keep spins to at least 2.5 seconds and cap online slot stakes at £5, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24.
1spin4win's Golden Joker Halloween keeps it to a 3x3 grid
1spin4win has added a seasonal release, Golden Joker Halloween, a small-grid game built for players who prefer simple maths to cascading chaos. Yogonet reported the launch on 26 October.
The game runs on a 3x3 grid. The Black Star is the wild and stands in for everything except the Coins, three or more Coins open the Bonus game, and a Plus Coin that can land on the third reel during the bonus awards an extra Bonus Spin. Filling the grid with nine identical symbols doubles the payout, and the top prize is 2,000x the original bet.
No RTP or volatility was published with the launch news. Its 2,000x ceiling is far below the 25,000x on Sweet Bonanza POP, and the paytable in the game itself is the only figure to trust.

Ainsworth takes its land-based catalogue online with Calímaco
Australian machine maker Ainsworth Game Technology is putting its casino-floor games into more online lobbies through a deal with Calímaco, announced on 26 October. Its online arm, Ainsworth Interactive, will integrate titles originally built for land-based casinos into Calímaco's platform, which serves iGaming operators in Latin America and Spain.
Bernie Gamboa, Ainsworth's online director for Latin America and Europe, said the deal reflects the company's view that "the future of our industry is omnichannel". No specific titles were named. Land-based conversions tend to keep the original look and mechanics, which suits players who know the cabinets from casino floors.
What to watch next week
SiGMA World in Rome, 2 to 5 November. The show returns to Fiera Roma with organisers expecting 30,000 delegates and more than 1,200 sponsors and exhibitors, so the next fortnight will bring a wave of slot roadmaps and studio deals.
Brazil's measure in Congress. The provisional measure starts blocking the congressional agenda from 9 November, and a Supreme Court ruling on the industry's challenge could land at any time.
UK risk checks. The Gambling Commission's full response on financial risk assessments is due this autumn, and any detail on thresholds will tell high-staking slots players what to expect.

FAQs
Why was L & L Europe fined £900,000?
L & L Europe agreed a £900,000 settlement with the Gambling Commission on 21 October 2026 over withdrawal delays, weak anti-money laundering controls and patchy safer gambling alerts. Its terms allowed only one withdrawal request at a time, and some customers had every fifth or tenth withdrawal held for manual review, triggering document requests the Commission said should have come earlier.
Can a UK online casino delay my withdrawal?
A UK-licensed casino can carry out checks, but it should not hold back money with unfair terms or ask for information only at cash-out that it could reasonably have requested earlier. The Gambling Commission's standards say withdrawals should be as frictionless as possible and that customers must not be able to cancel a withdrawal request to keep gambling.
Is online casino still legal in Brazil?
Not for now. Provisional measure MP 1.394/2026, in force since 25 September 2026, bans betting offers and advertising, licensed sites went offline on 6 October and 85 federal licences expired on 25 October. Congress must consider the measure by 25 November, and most proposed amendments would restore sports betting without online casino.
What is the Remote Gaming Duty rate in the UK?
Remote Gaming Duty, the tax on online casino and slots revenue, rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. A separate 25% rate for remote betting starts on 1 April 2027. Evoke says the changes will add £125m to £135m a year to its duty bill, and plans supplier savings and lower marketing spend to offset about half.
What are the features of Sweet Bonanza POP?
Sweet Bonanza POP, released by Pragmatic Play on 20 October 2026, pays for matching symbols anywhere on a tumbling grid. Three or more lollipop scatters or POP symbols award 10 free spins, and triggering with one, two or three POP symbols pays an instant 50x, 500x or 25,000x.
